External Affairs Committee

To advance the practice of risk management by serving as RIMS’ voice on public policy issues and to promote and maintain relationships with related industry groups, government agencies, and federal and state legislators. The committee will analyze legislative, regulatory and legal issues; and formulate positions to be disseminated to the Society membership and to the public. The committee will meet in person two times a year: one full day meeting, usually at the RIMS office in New York and a 2 hour meeting at the RIMS annual conference. Travel is required to both meetings. Members of the committee are also expected to attend the annual RIMS on the Hill event in Washington D.C. Conference calls occur the third Tuesday of every month. Subcommittees and ad hoc task forces meet on an “as needed” basis, either in person or by conference call. Other time commitments include reviewing various e-mails from RIMS Government Affairs staff, critiquing RIMS’ written position on various legislation and regulations, answering press inquiries, as well as possible representation of RIMS at various industry meetings. Time commitment is approximately 1 hour per week for committee members, 2-3 hours per week for the committee chair. Committee members must be able to meet deadlines and respond to requests. Must be able to interact with the media and legislators, on behalf of RIMS, and offer insight on legislative and regulatory issues. It is helpful for members to have resources and contacts within and outside the profession. Members must be dedicated to risk management, and have an interest in state and federal legislative and regulatory affairs.
