The Truth About Models

We all hear in our jobs and in the media about flood and earthquake models and what they prove. Is that really true? Do we and the media read too much into models?  What information and from what sources should we take seriously?  Our flood and earthquake modeling experts will discuss what ‎a model is designed to demonstrate and more importantly where models are pushed too far.

Speakers:

Monica.jpgMonica Mannerstrom, P.EngNorthwest Hydraulic Consultants

Ms. Monica Mannerstrom is a Principal with NHC and has 30 years of technical experience in hydraulics, hydrology and sedimentation engineering acquired through a wide variety of water resource projects. She has been responsible for project management, technical investigations and construction coordination. Her background includes assessment of flood hazards and risks, floodplain mapping and management studies, erosion control, bridge hydraulics and dike/dam breach evaluations.

She has contracted with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists in BC to give professional development seminars on flood management and was assigned to review the Association’s draft guidelines for flood studies and mapping. She initiated the BC Flood Management Committee of the Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA), and has published technical papers and given presentations at engineering conferences in Canada as well as abroad. Ms. Mannerstrom holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from McGill University and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from UBC.

Dr. John Cassidy, Ph.DNatural Resources Canada – Geologic Survey of Canada

Dr. Cassidy studies earthquakes and earthquake hazards across Canada. He is applying new methods to obtain precise earthquake locations by looking for "hidden” faults and is helping to map the forces that cause earthquakes. His research looks at what controls ground shaking, including the earthquake source and rupture characteristics, wave propagation, and local site effects. He works closely with the engineering community and emergency managers and planners.

Dr. Cassidy was a part of the Canadian Association of Earthquake Engineers Reconnaissance Team that travelled to Chile immediately after the devastating 2010 magnitude 8.8 earthquake. There he witnessed first-hand the impact of this earthquake and tsunami and the critical role that earthquake science, engineering, and public education plays in saving lives. Dr. Cassidy obtained his Ph.D in Geophysics from UBC.
