Topic: Changing an Organization’s Risk Culture

Changing an organization’s risk culture is a long-term effort that is much like playing snakes and ladders. Some actions create significant positive change while others cause you to slide back and start over. The session will talk about a 10-year risk transformation after a catastrophic event, covering initiatives that went as planned and ones that were learning experiences.

BIO:   Steve Matterson’s 35-year career has included:

• Director of Risk and Insurance, BC Ferry Services Ltd
• Captive General Manager, BC Ferry Services Ltd
• Risk Manager, City of Surrey
• Captain, Township of Langley Fire Department

Steve’s education includes Risk Fellow, Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional and BA (Economics). His approach to risk management uses the many lessons learned through the various emergency responses as well as traditional risk and insurance experience. Steve’s accomplishments are too numerous to mention.

Presentation – Dr. Scott Thompson, U of S Faculty

Topic:  Surveillance, Privacy and Society: Big Brother to Edward Snowden

This presentation addresses the questions of “what is surveillance?” and “how is it shaping our daily lives?” It starts with why privacy is important, and then discusses what surveillance is and how it is impacting us day to day. Special attention will be paid to social media, police carding, government surveillance, and consumer surveillance, as well as what can be done about intrusions to privacy.

Dr. Scott Thompson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Saskatchewan. Having been called ‘the genuine historian of Surveillance Studies,’ Scott uses historical case studies in order to explain and address current and pressing issues in the areas of Criminology, Sociology and Surveillance

Studies. Scott is also currently a collaborator on ‘The Big Data Surveillance’ project, a five year, $2.5 million SSHRC Partnership Grant
