Case studies, hands on exercises and an ERM Action Planner are used throughout the workshop to bridge the gap between ERM theory and practice.

Dr. Joseph A. Milan
Joseph is a Principal of JA Milan and Associates, LLC, which was established as a private company in 2009. Joseph is an internationally recognized risk management professional with extensive experience in the design and implementation of enterprise risk management (ERM) programs. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated the ability to use innovative strategies to create long-term enterprise value. As Principal of JA Milan and Associates, Joseph helps ERM clients with the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of ERM programs. Joseph has helped clients from Central and South America to Canada and the Middle East initiate and improve their ERM initiatives. He has experience with multiple industry sectors, including energy, mining, financial institutions, commercial real estate, transportation, service, educational institutions, non-profits, and many others. In order to build the foundation for ERM implementations, Joseph brings strategic planning and communication skills as well as a deep understanding of major ERM frameworks. In support of ERM program execution, Joseph has extensive experience with business risk assessments and advanced analytics that assist organizations prioritize key risk areas and select risk treatments. He also helps organizations ensure continuous improvement through the development of relevant reports for reporting on known and emerging risks. Prior to forming JA Milan and Associates, Joseph served from 2006 to 2008 as Chief Risk Officer of UDR, Inc. one of the largest multifamily real estate investment trusts in the United States. At UDR, he developed and implemented an ERM program through comprehensive business risk assessments, development of an innovative approach to risk evaluation, and continuous improvement based on communication with internal and external stakeholders. Prior to UDR, Joseph served as Vice President and Risk Manager of AIMCO, and Senior Vice President of AIMCO Assurance, a captive insurance company domiciled in Bermuda. With total cost of risk of $105 M, Joseph applied innovative approaches to reducing costs, developing ways to turn risk into a profit center, and applied predictive analytics to support risk informed decisions within the organization. Joseph has over 24 years experience as a professional educator and trainer and has been a keynote presenter and facilitator at conferences and seminars on ERM in the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Central and South America. Joseph has published articles on ERM for CFO.com and invited papers on ERM. He was a member of the Risk and Insurance Management Society ERM Committee from 2007 to 2010. He holds a Doctoral Degree in International Relations from the University of Miami, Magna Cum Laude; a Masters Degree in Communication from the University of New Mexico, Summa Cum Laude; Bachelor Degrees in Communication and Spanish from the University of Northern Colorado, Magna Cum Laude; and holds an Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designation.
