Janet Stein is the Director of Risk Management & Insurance for the University of Calgary. She has been with the University since 1988 and with the division of Risk Management, Safety & Security since its inception in 1994.
She is responsible for providing risk management services for all areas of the University. This includes developing policies and procedures, promoting activities to mitigate risks, reviewing contracts and proposals, handling claims and providing insurance. With over 70 departments and 35,000 people involved in teaching, cutting edge research, internationalization projects and world class sport competitions, the University is continuously generating new opportunities making risk management a stimulating challenge.
Her web experience includes building the first risk management web site for the University in 1998, making the University of Calgary one of the first two Canadian universities to have risk management on the web. Presentations to RIMS, RIMS Canada and the Canadian CURIE group include the subjects of building a risk management website, international travel risk, managing the fear factor during a crisis and how to identify the gaps in your insurance program.
Janet has been a member of SARIMS and RIMS since 1996. She is currently serving as a Director on the RIMS Board and as an Advisor to the 2016 RIMS Canada Conference Local Organizing Committee. In the past, she has acted as a Chair of the RIMS Conference Committee, the Canadian RIMS Conference Committee and a Board member of the Canadian Universities Reciprocal Insurance Exchange (CURIE). She currently serves as Chair of the University Special Events Committee as well as sitting as an advisor to various other University committees.
In 2013 Janet was a recipient of the Donald M. Stuart award which celebrates Canadians who have made outstanding contributions in the risk management profession.
