Nowell Seaman is manager of Risk Management and Insurance Services for the University of Saskatchewan, a major Canadian medical-doctoral university renowned for biotechnology, agriculture, engineering, health sciences, the Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Organization (VIDO) and the Canadian Light Source, one of Canada’s largest scientific research facilities. His responsibilities include risk management, corporate insurance, emergency measures planning and crisis response, as well as the university’s enterprise risk management (ERM) program.
Prior to joining the University in 1995, Mr. Seaman was a partner and director in a private corporation that operated insurance brokerage, real estate and property management businesses in Saskatoon SK.
Mr. Seaman holds the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designations. He has instructed many Insurance Institute of Canada (IIC) courses, speaks regularly at conferences and seminars, and he has written articles on risk management for University Manager, a magazine published by the Canadian Association of University Business Officers (CAUBO). In 1995, he was a member of a team of Canada/U.S. representatives that presented seminars to industry and state regulators in Moscow on a project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency.
Mr. Seaman has served on the RIMS board of directors since 2007. His past involvement in RIMS includes RIMS Canada Council (1997 - 2005) including chair from 2003–2005, RIMS Canada Conference Chair (2002), and Saskatchewan Chapter of RIMS director (1997–2007).
From 2000 to 2002, he chaired the secretariat that resulted in the creation of the McGannon Foundation, a charitable trust that supports post-secondary education and research in risk management in Canada through the provision of scholarships and grants. He has also served on the McGannon Foundation board of directors.
In 2007, Mr. Seaman received the Donald M. Stuart Award, Canada’s highest honor within the risk management discipline.
