Meeting Title: Lessons From Recent Earthquakes and a Risk Management Approach Guest Speaker: Mark R. Pierepiekarz, PE, SE - President MRP Engineering, LLC The recent massive subduction zone earthquakes in Chile and Japan could be repeated elsewhere. These events underscore the need for and the value of pro-active earthquake risk management. MRP Engineering traveled to the recent earthquake and tsunami affected areas to study impacts, observe recovery efforts, and report on relevant lessons for earthquake-prone regions elsewhere. This presentation will address these commonly asked questions: • What are the lessons from the earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, New Zealand, and Japan? • In what regions are earthquake hazards a concern? • What types of structures are most vulnerable? • How can critical equipment be protected? • What does “Build to Code” mean? • What constitutes earthquake risk and how is it managed? • How is earthquake risk evaluated and quantified (insurance limits)? The program will also include an overview presentation of a systematic earthquake risk management program applied by Kraft Foods in screening, evaluating, and reducing earthquake risks to their facilities worldwide. This approach has value in making insurance procurement decisions (coverage limits), planning for efficient recovery of operations, and addressing unacceptable business risks. Join us on February 28th for this informative presentation.
