Bud sometimes goes by “Walter” when a book he is reading says not to name your child “Bud,” for fear that they will have a rough childhood, or when people won’t believe that his given name is actually “Bud.” He was raised on the west side of the railroad tracks in Alpine, Utah; there aren’t actually train tracks in Alpine, but if there were, he would have grown up on the west side. Bud’s girlfriend in high school was his 1955 Chevrolet Truck which he put all of his time, money, blood, sweat, and tears into and then sold; a decision he kicks himself for almost daily.
Bud grew up watching the Three Stooges, Knight Rider, Airwolf, and CHiPS, and dreaming he was one of the brumbies in The Man from Snowy River. His CHiPS big wheel, which came equipped with a siren, had a lot to do with his pursuing a boyhood dream at the ripe old age of 22 when he landed his first professional job as a police officer.
Bud was the first in his family tree to attend university. In 2005 he graduated from Weber State with a BA in Criminal Justice. Then, following the prodding of two friends, he decided that if he was smart enough to get a bachelor’s degree then he ought to try following another boyhood dream and attend law school. After graduating from Florida Coastal School of Law in 2009 he returned to Utah and clerked for the Honorable Donald J. Eyre and James Brady of Utah’s Fourth Judicial District Court.
In January of 2013 Bud was given a new dream to chase when he was assigned the risk management and safety officer duties for the City of Provo. The learning curve has been steep and while he knows he still has a lot to learn, he is grateful for the friendships that have been formed in professional associations such as RIMS where he can lean on men and women of great knowledge and skill to help him learn and grow.
Perhaps his greatest achievement in life occurred in 2013 when he somehow convinced the woman of his dreams, Kim, to marry him. They are the proud parents of a 20 month old son, and proud parents-to-be of a daughter who is due on April 19th. Bring on the sleepless nights.
