  • Creating and Building a Safety Culture - October 9 Chapter Luncheon

    Join us at Little America Hotel on October 9 at 11:30 AM. The RIMS Utah Chapter October Luncheon will continue to provide an interesting and informative meeting and networking opportunity at our new venue. The October meeting will consist of a panel discussion. The topic is “Creating and Building a Safety Culture”. The panelists will be: Tim Rodriguez, Risk Manager, with UDOT, Nick Baird, Operations Manager/Safety Director with Hadco Construction and Mark P. Chavez, Manager of Corporate Safety, with Barrick Gold Corporation. NICHOLAS R. BAIRD Nick is the Operations Manager / Safety Director for Hadco Construction. Hadco Construction is a Civil Construction company with 5 divisions including land development, residential, concrete, 60 semis, and 5 aggregate pits with 375 employees. Nick started working for Hadco Construction in 2010. Nick started building the safety and risk management program from the ground up and has turned Hadco Construction into an industry leader in safety. Nick is involved in all aspects of safety and risk management, from preventative safety management to managing all claims and lawsuits for Hadco Construction. Nick’s undergraduate degree came from BYU-Idaho in Construction Management and he recently completed his Masters of Supply Chain Management graduate degree from the University of San Diego. Nick enjoys reading, camping, sports, and coaching his 6 year olds soccer team. Nick lives with his wife Carrie Baird and their 3 kids. TIMOTHY M. RODRIGUEZ, CPCU, CRIS, ARM-P, AIM, AIS, AINS Tim is currently the Risk Manager for UDOT. He started working for UDOT in 2010 He started out in the insurance industry in 1998 as the subrogation specialist for the Utah Transit Authority. He was promoted to Loss Control Specialist in 2001 and was involved in the safety, security and emergency management for the Transit Authority during the Olympics in 2002. Tim is also involved in the community as he coaches youth hockey for Salt Lake County. He recently left the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors for Utahn’s Against Hunger as well as Volunteer Coordinator for Taste of the Nation. For fun, Tim enjoys yoga, running and hiking. He lives with his wife, Sharron, and their three dogs. MARK P. CHAVEZ Mark is currently employed by Barrick Gold Corporation as Manager of Corporate Safety. Barrick is the world’s largest gold producer with 19 mining & project operations in 11 countries on five continents. Throughout the course of his 24 years in the field of Safety, Health, & Environmental (SH&E) leadership, Mark has represented owners, general contractors, and subcontractors. Mark has led the SH&E departments on some of Utah’s most notable construction projects such as the Grand America Hotel, the 2002 Winter Olympic Wasatch-Back Venues, the Utah State Capitol Base Isolation and Restoration Project and the City Creek Center Project. Mark serves as President of the Utah Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers. He was the recipient of the Chapter’s Safety Professional of the Year Award in 2005. Mark has served as an instructor for the Mountain West OSHA Training and Outreach Center; on the planning committee for the Annual Utah Conference on Safety & Industrial Hygiene; on the CE advisory committee for the University of Utah’s Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health and on the Center’s planning committee for the Compensable Disability Forum.
