Presentation: Integrated Health and Safety - Total Worker Health Program

Traditional occupational safety and health interventions focus on preventing work related injuries and illnesses, which can lead to morbidity, mortality, and considerable financial and social costs. Health promotion interventions, often called “wellness programs”, promote the overall health and well-being of employees. These programs often address modifiable behavior risk factors, such as smoking, physical activity, and diet, which are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States (Feltner, 2016).  Improvements in the work environment and the organization of work have now been recognized as foundational to promoting the overall health of working populations.  Employers are now embracing health promotion and disease management to control costs and maintain a healthy and productive workforce.

The Total Worker Health (TWH) program of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was first considered in 2003, and formally published in 2011.  This program aims to advance worker well-being by integrating injury and illness prevention efforts with work-related safety and health hazard efforts.
This RIMS presentation will review the main actionable aspects of the NIOSH TWH program, keys to success, examples, and constructive criticisms to provide future improvement opportunities.
